If your anything like me you’ve probably heard a hundred different things about what foods are good to eat and what foods will practically guarantee that you’ll gains extra pounds.  Things like……

“only eat proteins”

“carbohydrates are your enemy”

“If you want to be healthy and lose weight, then you have to sacrifice the foods you love” .

To be honest I’ve gotten a little sick of hearing all this different things and decided that I would finally find a way to eat the types of foods I love while still living a healthy lifestyle.

I recently came across an online course that I have found extremely valuable called The Diet Solution.  Its by a woman named Isabel De Los Rios who is a certified Holistic Nutrition Coach.

What I really enjoy about her course is how clear and well rounded of an approach to nutrition she takes.   Being someone that absolutely LOVES carbohydrates, I found her information about carbohydrates a refreshing approach that still allowed me to eat a lot of the foods I loved while still seeing good results in my health and weight.  She is a big advocate of eating more complex carbohydrates instead of simple carbohydrates.

Here is a short video of Isabel talking about what carbohydrates are the best to eat.

Seeing her explain dietary lessons I find myself really resonating well with Isabel clear teaching style.

A big portion of her course The Diet Solution is based around individualize meal plans.  When you start the course she has you go through a questionnaire.  Afterwards you receive over 20 individual full days of meals and snacks with dozens of recipes all catered to your personal body type and goals.  It’s really nice because it completely takes the thinking and stress out of having to make the best choices on what to eat.  Her meal plans are easy to follow and include foods that taste really amazing.

The Diet Solution Program Recommended Foods

Like I said before Isabel recommends eating more complex carbohydrates.  Most junk foods are looked down upon.  Processed foods are replaced with nuts, fruits, vegetables and other types of high nutritional foods.

I can’t tell you exactly what foods you will be prescribed because that’s based entirely on your body type and the information you provide in the questionnaire.  But basically the overall basis is around eating a well rounded healthy diet.

Positive things about The Diet Solution program

  • Definitly not a “fad” diet that’s here today and gone tomorrow. It’s the complete opposite, a nutritional life style program that is focused on long term benefits and not quick fixes.
  • Founded on solid science but explained in a way that anyone can understand
  • Completely customized meal plans based on your body type, not a one sizes fits all approach like most diet programs.
  • The emphasis is on nutritious, nutrient rich foods such as vegetables, fruits, lean proteins and complex carbohydrates.
  • Huge variety of meals and variations with a ton of flavor.
  • Really useful quick start guide that gets you started almost immediately.
  • Great support. All the questions I asked their support were answered in less than a day and they’re super friendly and supportive.

Some negitives

  • If your vegetarian, the program might be a little more difficult because she does recommend lean proteins.
  • Not a quick fix diet.  If you need to lose 10lbs in 48hrs, this probably isn’t for you.
  • Although the support is great, it would be cool to see a community forum of some sort so other members could talk to each other.

Overall Conclusion on The Diet Solution Program

The Diet Solution is a long term health approach to fat loss and health.  People looking for quick “overnight results” probably will be disappointed.  For me the program has been a life saver.  The huge time savings in having the nutrition plans is great and they are the healthiest I have seen.

If your interested in improving your health and want to lose  weight through diet, then I wouldn’t hesitate at all to recommend you take a look at The Diet Solution.

Carbohydrates are a large source of the body’s energy.  Carbohydrates are converted by the body into glucose which is a form of sugar that is used by the body. As you may have heard over the years, there are good carbs and bad carbs. If you maintain a diet that is too high in carbohydrates it can negatively affect the body’s balance in several ways.  The most prolific way is that it can skew the blood sugar level which will affect energy levels and even mood changes that will leave you feeling fatigued and irritable.

There are two main types of carbohydrates; simple and complex carbohydrates. Both types of carbohydrates form glucose when digested by the body.  That glucose is then transported throughout the body through the bloodstream and then is converted to energy by the cells.  The pancreas is located in the abdomen and it secretes insulin which controls how much glucose is used by the body’s cells.

If there is any glucose left over it is converted into glycogen which is then stored in fat cells.  Glycogen is also stored around the liver.  When the body is in need of supplemental energy a secondary hormone called glucagon comes into play.  The glucagon converts the glycogen back into glucose which is then released into the body for use via the bloodstream.

This process is known as glucose metabolism.  The difference between simple and complex carbohydrates is that complex carbohydrates take longer to go through the metabolic process which produces a slower and more sustained release of this energy.

Complex carbohydrates are also known as starch foods.  They can be found in many foods in their natural form and can also be refined in processed foods.  Some of the natural foods that complex carbohydrates can be found in are bananas, beans, chickpeas, lentils, nuts, oats, sweet corn, whole grain cereals and yams. Complex carbohydrates which are found as refined starches are found in biscuits and pastries, pizza, sugary breakfast cereals white bread and white pastas and white rice.

It is important to maintain a balanced diet that includes both carbohydrates and proteins.  If you have concerns about your dietary intake and how many carbs you really need to be taking in, consult your physician or dietitian.
